What is Collective Bargaining?

Collective bargaining is the process in which employees, through their unions, negotiate contracts with their employers to determine their terms of employment.

As one individual, unless you are a celebrity or uniquely in demand by the marketplace, you have very little negotiating power, but when enough of us unite to negotiate contracts together, we have enormous power, because if our union is not satisfied with the terms of a contract, we can withhold our services, called a work stoppage, or a “strike,” and bring the entertainment industry to a halt. That puts pressure on employers to offer better terms.

That’s the power of unions through collective bargaining.
