Local Leadership Positions

As laid out in each Local’s Constitution

Local President
Local Vice President
Other Local Officer
Local Board Member


Eligibility:

  • must have been in good standing throughout the two dues periods prior to, and the current dues period including the date of their nomination;

  • must be at least 18 years of age upon taking office;

  • must have been a member of the Local or group of Locals for the twelve (12) months prior to the date of their nomination as well as any additional criteria established under the Local’s Constitution and/or Rules of Procedure that have been approved by the National Board or its designee., and;

  • may not be a Management Employee as that term is defined in Article VIII.G of the SAG-AFTRA Constitution and applicable SAG-AFTRA policy.

  • In order to serve as a Local Officer or Local Board member in a seat designated for a particular Work Category, a member must have been a declared member of that category for the twelve (12) months prior to the date of his or her nomination, unless specifically provided otherwise in the Local Constitution.

Convention Delegate

Eligibility:

  • must have been a member in good standing of their Local for the six (6) months prior to the date of his or her nomination, and;

  • may not be a Management Employee as that term is defined in Article VIII.G of the SAG-AFTRA Constitution and applicable SAG-AFTRA policy.

  • In order to serve as a Convention delegate in a seat designated for a particular Work Category, a member must have been a declared member of that category for the six (6) months prior to the date of his or her nomination, unless specifically provided otherwise in the Local Constitution.


Local Committee Member

Eligibility:

  • must be a SAG-AFTRA member.

LOCAL PRESIDENT

Term: 2 years. Elected by all their Local’s members

Responsibilities:

  • Chairs the local board meetings and sets the meetings’ agenda

  • Sits on every local committee “ex officio,” meaning they can’t vote or make motions

  • General local representational duties such as at local events and labor organizations.

LOCAL VICE PRESIDENT/OFFICER

Term: 2 years. Elected by all their Local’s members according to their Local’s Constitution.
Some Locals have leadership positions set aside for specific member categories or regions of their Local’s jurisdiction and how they are elected and by whom.

Responsibilities:

  • Sits on the local board

  • Supports the local President

  • Chairs meetings in the absence of the President

  • Assumes local presidency in case of vacancy

LOCAL BOARD MEMBER

Term: 2 years. Elected by all their Local’s members

Responsibilities:

  • Attend local board meetings

  • Make motions, including advisory motions from the Local to the National Board

  • Deliberate and vote on local board actions

  • Responsible for, and oversight of, Local budgets and operations

  • Serve as a Pool for replacements for National Board Members from their Local who cannot attend a National Board meeting

LOCAL COMMITTEE MEMBER

Term: 2 years as Chair, Member, or Alternate. Seated by the Local President or committee chair and approved by the Local Board.
In some Locals the Local President chooses the Chairs of the committees and allows them to pick their committee members, still subject to Local Board approval.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend scheduled meetings of the committee

  • Plan and implement the committee’s activities

  • Meeting frequency varies depending on the chair and nature of business

    Types of committees:

  • Local executive committee

  • Service committees (ie. Conservatory, Organizing, Communications, etc)

CONVENTION DELEGATE

Term: 2 years. Elected by all their Local’s members

Responsibilities:

  • Attend the 4-day biennial national convention

  • Vote on executive vice president and national vice presidents

  • Submit resolutions for convention consideration

  • Deliberate and vote on convention resolutions

  • The convention also has the authority over: dues, initiation fees, and assessments, constitutional amendments, and reconsideration of national board decisions

  • Serve as temporary replacements for National Board member meeting absences
